The eighth edition of the international “New Voices of the Opera - Giovan Battista Velluti" contest, organised by the "Città della Riviera del Brenta" Small Enterprises’ Association from Dolo, saw the triumph of a Korean artist. The new and most outstanding voice of the world opera scene belongs to the baritone Gu Bon – Gang. This was decided by the jury, chaired by the famous tenor Gianfranco Cecchele and including the English singer Lorna Windsor, the artistic director of the Opera Theatre of Leipzig (N.d. t. “Upsia” è stata tradotta come Lipsia), Axel Joliet, the artistic director of the San Carlo Theatre in Naples, Alessandro Bonelli, the conductor Giacomo Zani, the creator of the “Luglio musicale trapanese” (Musical July in Trapani) event, Francesco Braschi, and the singing teacher Sherman Lowe.
Thanks to the organisational network set up by the artistic director of this international event, Dario Bisso, and the passionate collaboration of the chairman of the small firms’ association, Nereo Vanzan M.P., the real driving force behind this event, the contest was considered a success by both critics and audience. 35 under-35’s from all over the world signed up for the contest, in particular from the Far East, to test their voices in the operatic works of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. The artistic management of the event felt that there was a much higher quality of voice in the 2002 edition than in previous years. Many wonderful voices were therefore further thrilled by the chance of performing at the grand final, held on Saturday at the Excelsior Theatre in Dolo, accompanied by the Città di Adria Orchestra, directed by Giorgio Fabbri, and in the presence of a very special guest: the world famous baritone Renato Bruson, who will very probably chair the jury for the 2003 edition of this contest.
Second place was awarded to the Korean mezzo-soprano Mi Young Kim, and third place went to the Veneto soprano Erika Peder. The study grant was awarded to the Korean baritone Kwang Yul Wang. For the winners of this international contest, the doors to fame and fortune will inevitably new be opened, as we have already seen for their predecessors, who having been spotted by the prestigious members of the jury are today among the most sought-after opera voices on the international scene.
This event is supported by the President of the Republic, the President of the Council of Ministers of the Veneto Region, the province of Venice and the municipalities of the “Città della Riviera".
